A word processor is a standard that most people want on their computer. Most common is that they run
Microsoft Word, but because it cost a penny, there are reasons to look at free alternatives. One of the better ones is
AbiWord .
AbiWord has been developed over many years, and become a really good word processor. It has everything you as a user may require. To begin with, the program is
completely free and can be downloaded and used freely. In addition, AbiWord offers a stylish and easy to use interface, all basic functions and is being compatible with Word.
In this beginner's guide to the AbiWord thought I go through how to get started with the program. The installation is very simple. You simply download the program from its website, and install it. It works smoothly and you can click through the procedure using the
Next / Next . When AbiWord is installed, please download Import / Export Plug-ins and also installs the package.
The interface to AbiWord looks like it was in earlier versions of Word. If you did not like Microsoft's update with the tab system of menus, which came in later, Microsoft's Office suite, you will surely appreciate the simple and nerskalade menus and icons in AbiWord. The program is very compact and easy to work with.
Set program
By default,
spell checking enabled. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I prefer not to right takes place automatically because I think it becomes difficult to read and slow with all the red underlines of jargon you throw with. I have therefore chosen to turn off the automatic spelling correction, which is done under the menu
Tools -> Options -> Spelling .
AbiWord is again
compatible with Word . This means you can open documents saved in Word to AbiWord, and you can even save your documents in Word format to open them in Microsoft Word. Because Word is so widespread it might be a good idea to set the AbiWord to always save to this format. Go to
C: \ Documents and Settings \ Your Name \ AbiSuite \ and open the file
AbiWord.profile in
Notepad (Notepad).Locate the following lines, and add the line
default save format = ". doc" .
<Scheme
name = "_custom_"
ZoomPercentage = "103"
AutoGrammarCheck = "0"
default save format = ". doc"
/>
Common Features
As mentioned earlier, AbiWord contains all basic features like a word processor should have. You can change the font, size, bring bold and italic and so on. You can
create tables and paste images . The most you can do in Word, you can also do in AbiWord, and many times it works a lot faster and smoother in AbiWord.
One difference, however, between the Swedish and Swedish Word, AbiWord, and that is that
shortcuts are not translated. This means that you can learn new commands for example, put bold. Here are some of the most common:
- Bold -> [Ctrl] + [B]
- Italic -> [Ctrl] + [I]
- Underline -> [Ctrl] + [U]
- Clear Formatting -> [Ctrl] + [Space]
There are of course many others. Take a look in the menus so you can find the most as they are represented along with every menu selection.
This was a crash course in AbiWord: Give the program a chance. Have you bought a new PC with Microsoft Office pre-installed, so it was probably temporary, and then AbiWord just fine. Do you also have Excel and database, you can try OpenOffice .We'll go through OpenOffice come.
