HandBrake is an excellent free software and multi-platform (that is compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac OS X) that lets you convert DVD movies and convert them into different types of video: compressed files for viewing on computer, video iPod, iPhone and Apple TV, and video for other types of mobile devices.
To underline how the program is different from the usual solutions for "DVD ripping" was not designed to break the copy protection of commercial DVDs and does not throw in the classic video format DivX + MP3.
